Vergelegen Wine Estate

About the Winemaker

Founded in 1700 by Willem Adriaan van der Stel, Vergelegen Wine Estate quickly became one of the Cape’s most ambitious agricultural projects. Set on the slopes of the Hottentots Holland mountains overlooking the Atlantic, its name meaning “far away” reflects its once-remote location. Within just a few years, the estate flourished with vast vineyards, orchards, livestock, and carefully planned infrastructure, establishing an early benchmark for winemaking and farming in South Africa.

Vergelegen was revitalised in the 20th century, notably by the Phillips family and later Anglo American, who restored the estate and re-established its vineyards. Today, it stands as one of South Africa’s leading wine estates, combining historic heritage with modern excellence, and producing wines that rank among the finest in the world.
