Klein Constantia
About the Winemaker & Estate
Established in 1685, Klein Constantia sits on the upper slopes of the Constantiaberg, overlooking False Bay, and has long been regarded as one of the world’s most beautiful wine estates. Originally founded by Simon van der Stel, the estate quickly gained recognition for its exceptional terroir. Following his death, the land was divided, with one portion becoming Klein Constantia - a name that would go on to earn global acclaim. By the 18th and 19th centuries, its wines were celebrated worldwide, enjoyed by figures like Napoleon Bonaparte and praised in the works of Jane Austen.
At the heart of it all is Matthew Day, only the third winemaker at Klein Constantia since the estate’s revival in the 1980s. Today, Klein Constantia continues to balance heritage with modern expertise, guided by an international team committed to quality, ensuring its legacy remains as influential as ever.
