We are about to embark on the Vivat Bacchus Wine and Wisdom for 2010. After the success of the event last year we have had many requests for more of these fun filled events. The Quiz is all fun, for a good cause, and engenders a healthy spirit of competition and banter.
Due to start in the last week of March, the competition consists of an easy-going general knowledge quiz for a third of the points, a wine knowledge quiz for another third and a wine tasting competition for the rest of the points. The competition is aimed at the amateur wine enthusiast i.e. the typical Vivat Bacchus diner and oenophile. The knowledge parts of the quiz will be on general and wine trivia, on par with a pub quiz, while the tasting part will be structured to start with easy tasting challenges initially and progress to a more advanced blind tasting in later rounds.
Teams of 3 to 6 members will be allowed to field and each team is allowed to enter two reserves. The competition is limited to amateurs, i.e. NOT people employed in the wine trade or with MW or similar qualifications. The format will be a round robin competition of four rounds, after which the average scores of the teams will determine their position (seeding) in the knock-out competition. Once all the entries are in, we will announce the initial draw at a social event at VB. After we have completed the round robin, the schedule for the rest of the competition will be announced, once again at a social gathering at Vivat Bacchus Farringdon.
As was the case last year, Paul Cluver Wines from Elgin in the Cape will be our sponsor and the welcoming drink at every meeting will be the fabulous Paul Cluver Sauvignon Blanc. We will once again use the competition to raise funds for Charity; £1000 will go to the charity of choice of the winning team and £500 to the charity of choice of the runners up. The winning team will also win the Vivat Bacchus Wine and Wisdom Floating Trophy (won last year by the team from De Beers) plus a dinner at Vivat Bacchus to the value of £600. The runners-up will take home six bottles of Paul Cluver wines each. The teams that do not make it into the knock-out competition will qualify for the plate event which will run concurrently with the main competition and the winners of this will take home a bottle of Paul Cluver wine each.
The competition is to be held at 7.30pm on Tuesday nights in the Wine Room at Vivat Bacchus Farringdon from Tuesday March 30th, and should last for about one and a half hours per night. Competitors will be eligible for a 15% discount on food and drink enjoyed after the proceedings in the Wine Bar and the Restaurant on the night. The entry fee will be £15 per person per round, of which £5 will go towards the Charities. Competitors are welcome to join us for a complimentary glass of wine from 7pm in the Wine Bar on the night of the competition.
